Modern Milkman

Modern Milkman is a plastic-free grocery delivery service, bringing traditional doorstep deliveries up to date through the convenience of an app.

I helped build the brand and was responsible for designing the app and website during a 3-month placement in summer 2019.

Challenge

Worldwide, we buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute. Just 23% of these end up being recycled. How might we reduce the amount of single-use plastic by offering an alternative to supermarket bought products?

Solution

Traditionally people would have milk and other convenience items delivered to their doorstep, returning empty glass bottles to be refilled and used again. We created a service to revolutionise this dying tradition, allowing customers to order locally sourced and plastic-free products through the convenience of an app.

Impact

Starting off as a single milk round in Colne, Lancashire, Modern Milkman now provides over 60,000 deliveries each week across Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and all over the North West. Since COVID 19, the company has also grown 5X and has been working with charities to deliver food to the most vulnerable.

During the early stages of delivery, some drivers experienced problems finding the locations of certain addresses, particularly in rural areas.

To tackle this problem, we introduced a step-by-step sign-up process, which required users to confirm their location on a map. They could also add a delivery note for the driver to specify where exactly they wanted their products leaving.

Creating an order

After signing up, users are prompted to create their first order. From here they can browse different categories before adding products to a recurring delivery or one-time purchase. Users can then select a start date and checkout.

Pausing a subscription

Customers may choose to pause their orders if they are going away. Previously, they would select the start and end dates of their holiday, however this created confusion as to which deliveries were paused and when they would restart.

I redesigned this feature so users could select each delivery day they wanted to pause. This gives users more control and helps avoid any confusion.

Delivery calendar

Customers can view their past and upcoming deliveries from the calendar. They can add more items or skip an order, otherwise, users can report a problem with a previous delivery.
